A dish made of shredded salted cod, onions, thinly chopped fried potatoes and scrambled eggs. It is usually garnished with black olives and chopped parsley. Cod is very popular in Portugal, especially salted and dried cod. Another very popular national dish of Portugal is Cozido à Portuguesa, a traditional stew.

The Portuguese were one of the first to fish for cod. They loved the fish because it is very versatile. It is said that there are more than 1000 Portuguese cod recipes. The most popular way to prepare cod is by salting and drying it. Originally this was a way to preserve the cod when there were no refrigerators. Nowadays, it is prepared this way to enhance the flavour.

Bacalhau à brás uses ingredients very common in Portuguese cuisine. Black olives are plentiful in Portugal as well as cod, potatoes and eggs. It is a simple dish that is the ultimate Portuguese comfort food.
