About Norway’s national dish

Fårikål has been the official national dish of Norway since 1972. In 2014, voting was opened to choose a new national dish. Fårikål won again with a 45% vote from the Norwegian public. Fårikål is a humble and simple dish available to everyone with a lot of flavour because of the long cooking time. It can be made from mutton or lamb. It is said if this dish looks pretty after it is cooked, it was not done right. Norwegians have a special holiday for this dish. As a symbol of the end of summer, fårikål is eaten on the last Thursday of September.
