A brief history…
About Moldova’s national dish
Mămăligă is a dish for the poor and the rich. It is very cheap but can be served with an array of sides or garnishes based on what you have at hand. Mămăligă was introduced to Europe in the 16th century, when the Turks brought over corn. Corn was from the New World but was introduced to the Turks by Venetian merchants. It was after this time that cornmeal was made and dishes like mămăligă came to exist. Mămăligă is known in Italy and around the world as polenta.
